- 1). Click the "System Preferences" icon on your laptop screen's dock, or click the "Apple" icon and select "System Preferences" from the pull-down menu, according to Pogue.
- 2). Select the "Network" icon in the "Internet & Wireless" section of System Preferences and click "Turn AirPort On" in the Network window. Check the box next to "Ask to join new networks" and the box next to "Show AirPort status in menu bar." Click "Advanced" in the Network window.
- 3). Click the drop-down menu next to "Network Name" and select your Wi-Fi network's name from the menu. If your Wi-Fi network does not appear, click the "Advanced" button in the Network window.
- 4). Select the "+" icon beneath the Preferred network list and type in the name of your network in the "Network Name" field. Click the pull-down menu next to "Security" and select the security type for your network. Although many personal Wi-Fi networks use WEP passwords, your Wi-Fi network may use a different type of security. Refer to the instruction manual that came with your wireless modem to determine the security type, or contact your Internet service provider.
- 5). Enter your network's password and click the "Add" button to add the new network to the list of preferred networks. Select "OK" to save the changes and return to the Network window. Click the Wi-Fi signal and click the name of your network from the pull-down menu.
