- 1). Buy the right tie rods for your Dodge Ram, as they can vary for model year to model year, as well as for the 1500, 2500 and the 3500.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, and jack up your truck. Once you have it safely on jack stands, remove the tires.
- 3). Take out the bolt that connects the tie rod to the steering gear. Mark the threads on the tie rod to show its position in the rod adjuster, then loosen the nut.
- 4). Unscrew the tie rod, counting the turns as you go. Write down that number.
- 5). Transfer the marks you made on the old tie rod to the new one. Screw the tie rod on, making sure you do it in the same number of turns. Double check by looking for the mark you made on the threads. Tighten the nut to 77 foot pounds. Put the other end of the tie rod into the steering gear, and insert the bolt and tighten it.
- 6). Repeat the steps for the other tie rod, then put back on the tires. Tighten the lug nuts to 95 foot pounds. Get your Dodge Ram aligned.
