How to Replace a Fuel Pump for a 1992 Toyota Pickup

    Fuel Pump Removal

    • 1). Prepare the vehicle for service by parking the vehicle on level ground and setting the parking brake. Locate the fuel pump relay. It is located in the main fuse compartment under the hood, on the right side of the engine compartment.

    • 2). Start the vehicle and let it idle normally. Then disconnect the fuel pump relay by pulling straight up on it. Let the engine die out from lack of fuel. Then try to start the engine a few times to relieve fuel pressure in the engine. Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench.

    • 3). Drain the fuel tank by opening the drain plug with a suitable wrench and draining the fuel in a suitable container. Reinstall the fuel tank plug. Disconnect the wiring to the fuel tank sending unit and fuel pump. Disconnect all hoses attached to the tank. Remove the fuel tank shield. Then remove bolts at the tank ends and carefully remove it.

    • 4). Remove the sending unit screws using a Philips screwdriver. The sending unit looks like a round cap with small pipes and wires coming out of it. Pull the sending unit out of the tank and set it on a clean surface.

    • 5). Remove the fuel pump from the sending unit by removing two wires held on with nuts with a wrench. Then pull the base of the fuel pump away from the sending unit assembly. Remove the rubber hose still connected to the pump by squeezing the hose clamp to release tension with a set of pliers. Then gently pull and twist the pump from the hose.

    Fuel Pump Installation

    • 1). Install the new fuel pump and fuel suction strainer assembly by attaching the new strainer to the fuel pump. Squeeze the discharge hose clamp to release tension and insert the fuel pump into hose. Reinsert the fuel pump into the fuel sending assembly by inserting the top of the pump, then the bottom. Connect the two wires to the pump.

    • 2). Replace the rubber seal on the fuel tank sending unit. Insert the assembled fuel tank sending unit with pump into the fuel tank and tighten the screws.

    • 3). Reinstall the fuel tank by installing the fuel tank shield. Reinstall all hoses and wiring. Put the tank into position and install mounting bolts into each end of the fuel tank assembly.

    • 4). Put fuel into the gas tank through the normal fuel filler pipes.

    • 5). Reinstall the main fuel pump relay. Then install the negative battery terminal with a wrench. Turn the ignition switch to the on position, but do not start the engine yet. This will start the fuel pump and pressurize the system. Check around the fuel tank for leaks. If there are no leaks, start the engine. It may take several attempts as the system re-pressurizes itself. After each failed attempt. Turn the key to the off position, and then back on to attempt another start.
