- Oil furnaces require more cleaning than electric furnaces. There are fuel filters in most models, but these have to be replaced, sometimes as often as monthly, depending on the model. Nozzles can get clogged with residue from the oil of elements that are not combustible and dirt that gets in when fueling.
- Oil furnaces might not require as much electricity as an electric heater, but they require more electricity than a gas furnace. In the winter months when your neighbors have reduced their electric bills because they are using gas and no longer using central as they were during the summer, you could see an increase in your bill just to keep warm. The area it heats may be relatively small in relation to the boost to your energy costs.
- In some models, it's difficult to control how much heat is generated. You could end up warming your home up to the point that it's uncomfortable. Then you have to turn off the furnace. Suddenly, it's freezing cold again and you have to turn it back on. You may never be comfortable in this battle.
