- 1). Place your balsa wood sheet on a worktable. Place a cutting board between the table and balsa wood to protect the table surface and the tip of the hobby knife blade.
- 2). Measure and mark the cutting lines or trace the outline of the shapes to be cut out with a straightedge and pencil.
- 3). Secure the wood sheet to the table with C-clamps or mini clamps. Place a clamp at two opposite ends of the sheet.
- 4). Place your straightedge along the cut line. The straightedge will act as a guide for making a straight cut.
- 5). Run your hobby knife blade along the side of straight edge applying light pressure to score the cutting line.
- 6). Make a second run along the cutting line applying a bit more pressure.
- 7). Keep scoring the balsa wood until you have cut all the way through. Do not try to rush the cut by pressing too hard as this can fray the edge and cause you to go off the line or damage the tip of the blade.
- 8). Sand the edge to smooth it down. Start with a 220-grit sandpaper and finish with a 600- or 800-grit sandpaper.
