- 1). Measure the length of your sidewalk area to get a good idea of how many solar sidewalk lights you want to install. Use a measuring tape to do this. If your sidewalk curves, it's okay. You just need a rough estimate of the total length.
- 2). Purchase your solar lights. There are two options here. One type of solar lights contains everything you need to install it all in one piece. This includes the light, batteries, solar panel, electrical circuit panel and light bulb.
The second type of solar sidewalk light actually has a large solar panel that can be placed where there is maximum sun exposure. A flexible wire then connects it to the solar light itself. - 3). Remove the solar lights from the package. Separate the solar panel with flexible cord and the solar lights, if this is the kind you will use. The flexible cord is quite long, so you should have no problem positioning the solar panel in the correct location where it can be exposed to light.
- 4). Insert the bulbs into their sockets. Some solar panels package the bulbs separately so they can't get damaged before use. Simply twist off the top and insert the bulb. Some solar lights will have screws holding the cover on, so remove them with a screwdriver and insert the bulb.
- 5). Push the solar light into the ground via the stake at it's end. Be careful with the solar lights because they are often made out of plastic. Do the same if you have a separate solar panel and flexible cord. Position the solar lights along both sides of the sidewalk, about every two feet or so. Place the separate solar panel in the best location for maximum sun exposure.
