Identification

• Pepper plants are susceptible to infection from the seed-borne Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria bacterium that causes bacterial spot. The disease starts within or on the seed surface and is common during periods of high humidity and excessive moisture on plants.
  
  

Damage

• The disease is characterized by the appearance of small, angular, 1/4-inch diameter spots on all areas of plants starting from foliage undersides. The watersoaked spots gradually turn brown. Stems develop elongated, raised cankers. The spots on the fruit are brown and have a rough, wart-like form.
  
  

Control

• Use healthy plants and seeds from reliable sources and rotate plants. Minimize the use of overhead irrigation as excessive moisture on plants favors disease development. Chemical control options include the use of copper-based products.
