Most of New York State's public schools belong to the Public Schools Athletic League, or the PSAL. The PSAL is governed by the National Federation of High School Associations, which regulates high school sports rules throughout the country. The NFHS has specific requirements for the type of uniforms to be worn by players participating in basketball. Schools participating in sanctioned athletic events in New York State are required to follow these rules. - Rule 12 in the PSAL Rule Book states that all participants must be in school uniforms that are appropriate according to the NFHS Rules and Regulations. The rule goes on to state that each school must have two sets of uniforms, or one uniform with reversible colors and that the visiting team must wear dark colors while the home team wears light colors. New York uniforms are required to have official size letters and numbers. Rule 12 also specifically prohibits jewelry being worn during an athletic contest. If an athlete does not remove this jewelry, the referee is permitted to eject the athlete.
- The torso of the jersey, or the area of the jersey from the neckline to the bottom hem of the jersey and from side seam to side seam, must be a single solid color. The color must be white for the home team and a dark color for the visiting team. Visible manufacturer trademarks and logos are not permitted. The back of the jersey must be the same solid color as the front and the same rules apply regarding the manufacturer trademark or logo. The inserts on the side of the jersey can be any color or design but must be the same design on all team jerseys.
- NFHS rules require that the number on the front of the jersey be at least 4 inches high, not less than 3/4 inches wide and centered. The numerals are to be in plain Arabic and must match the number on the back in style and color. No more than three colors can be used in the number. The name of the school or the player's name is permitted on the front of the jersey above the number. Typically, the team name is on the front. There are no rules regarding the neckline of the front of a jersey. This is generally where a commemorative patch or flag is placed.
- As mentioned, the back of the jersey must be the same color as the front. The number on the back is required to be at least 6 inches high, no less than 3/4-inch wide and centered. The team name or the name of the player may be placed horizontally above or below the number. Like the front, there are no rules established regarding the neckline on the back of the jersey.
- Only certain numbers are legal under the NFHS rules and regulations for basketball uniforms. These are numbers that can be easily signaled by the referee using one hand, and therefore stop after five. Legal numbers are 00, 0-5, 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45 and 50-55. A team must choose between 0 and 00, but cannot have both numbers.
