  In east central Kansas, the community of Wamego boasts a historic past, captured in a local museum, an art center and even a Wizard of Oz museum that pays tribute to the Frank Baum movie. Near the Oregon Trail, visitors can trace the wagon ruts from some of the area's earliest visitors, or even sit in the shade of the largest American elm tree in the United States. Wamego is about 35 miles from Kansas' capital city of Topeka, and just 15 miles from Manhattan, Kansas, home of Kansas State University. Both of those cities offer many accommodations for travelers. Visitors to Wamego can stay in town, though, at one of the two local hotels or two bed and breakfasts.

• Built as a Super 8 Motel in 2003, ownership group Wyndham converted the property in 2009 to the Wamego Inn & Suites. As part of the conversion, the property was remodeled and the lobby/breakfast area was expanded and a swimming pool was added. Guests at the Wamego Inn & Suites enjoy wireless Internet access, in-room refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers and a free continental breakfast. Victory Inn Bed & Breakfast

• The Victory Inn Bed & Breakfast features four guest rooms, each uniquely decorated. The 19th-century home that houses the bed and breakfast is furnished with European antiques. Eagle View Inn

• The historic Boyd Building, built in 1885, houses the Eagle View Inn, a bed and breakfast with four rooms, each with a private bath. The Eagle View is on the second floor of the building, which also houses the Friendly Cooker restaurant. Guests at Eagle View have access to kitchen facilities, and receive breakfast from the Friendly Cooker with their stay. Located in downtown Wamego, the Eagle View is across the street from Wamego's historic Columbian Theater museum and art center.
