- 1). Measure the length and width of your room.
- 2). Multiply the length by the width for rectangular or square rooms. For triangular rooms, multiply the length by the width and divide by two.
- 3). Determine the proper BTU required for the air conditioner your room will need. For 100 to 150 sq. ft., 5,000 BTUs is suitable to effectively cool the room. For larger rooms between 1,000 to 1,400 sq. ft., the appropriate BTU is between 21,000 to 23,000. Rooms up to 2,500 sq. ft. require an air conditioner set at 35,000 BTUs.
