- 1). Apply the parking brake, start the engine and let it idle for about 20 minutes to bring it up to operating temperature. Depress the brake pedal and move the transmission shift selector through every gear and back to park.
- 2). Chock the front and rear wheels. Open the hood and pull the transmission dipstick out of its tube.
- 3). Wipe the tip of the dipstick clean and insert it back into its tube completely. Pull the dipstick out of the tube again and rest the tip horizontally on the towel. The fluid level should be between the "Add" and "Full" marks. If the level is at or below the "Add" mark, add half of a quart or less of transmission oil until it reaches the correct level.
- 4). Check the transmission fluid for small particles of metal, dirt or moisture. If the fluid has become contaminated, changed its clear red color or smells burnt, replace the fluid.
- 5). Replace the dipstick into its tube, close the hood, turn off the engine and remove the chocks
