- 1). Turn the appliance gas control valve to the "OFF" position. Wait five minutes to allow any accumulated gas to clear. Although a slight propane odor may be present, there should never be a strong propane odor when you light a gas appliance.
- 2). Turn the appliance control valve to the "PILOT" position. Some appliances require you to depress the control knob as you turn it.
- 3). Remove any access panels so you can reach the pilot light and burner compartment. Some appliances may require a screwdriver to remove screws holding the panels in place.
- 4). Light a fireplace match and hold the flame near the pilot light nozzle. Press the gas control knob in and hold it there. The pilot light should light immediately. Some propane appliances have an ignition switch. Use this instead of the fireplace match. Press the ignition switch. You will hear it snap and the spark will ignite the pilot light. Sometimes you have to press the ignition switch more than once.
- 5). Hold the gas control knob in for one minute. The pilot light needs time to heat the thermocouple that keeps the gas flowing to the pilot light. Release the gas control knob after one minute. The pilot light should remain lit. If it does not, you may need a new thermocouple.
- 6). Replace any access panels before turning the gas control knob to the ON position. Replace their screws if they were removed.
