- Because data is being transferred over a phone line, it must be filtered to prevent static when talking on the phone. Filters are usually provided with the modem by the Internet service provider (ISP). Connect these directly to the phone jack, and then connect the phone line from the filter to the phone. A filter should not be used for the line going into the DSL modem.
- Connect the DSL modem to the phone jack, using a regular phone line. Connect the computer to the DSL modem, using a Ethernet cable.
- Some DSL modems require configuring before standard use. This is often a matter of installing the software for the modem provided by the ISP, though sometimes it can involve having to access the modem manually. Either way, instructions for accessing the modem should be included with the modem package. It is common to have to enter a login and password for the computer to connect to the DSL modem.
- DSL provides high speed Internet that is much faster than a dial-up connection. In addition, the line is always on and will not be interrupted by phone calls, which can sometimes happen with dial-up.
