The main benefit of using an elliptical machine is that it can effectively raise the heart rate for an extending period of time, increasing aerobic fitness and creating a sustained calorie burn. The intensity of a workout on an elliptical is similar to that of a treadmill, although many claim that the perceived exertion on an elliptical machine is lower than a treadmill.

A major advantage elliptical machines have over treadmills and bicycles is that they engage both the leg and arm muscles. On an elliptical, you can pump vigorously with the arms to get an upper body workout. Some claim that the use of the arms and legs simultaneously results in greater overall calorie burning when using an elliptical versus running or cycling.

Another advantage of elliptical machines is that they are much easier on the joints than running on a treadmill. While running, the feet leave the ground and strike it forcefully, which is likely to cause joint pain and potentially sprains. The smooth motion of an elliptical is less jarring and joint injury is less common. The development of blisters is also less likely on an elliptical machine than on a treadmill.

Another important benefit of using an elliptical is that the chances of incurring a major injury are far less likely than a treadmill. Tripping and falling on a treadmill is extremely dangerous, as the moving track will fling the occupant off the apparatus. It is extremely unlikely to fall from an elliptical, since you plant your feet on pedals, and the arms are on handles that can provide support should you lose your balance.

Running relies entirely on body weight resistance, while stationary biking relies entirely on mechanical resistance. Elliptical machines provide the best of both worlds: the body's weight creates resistance, but the machine can also be set to resist rotation to make the exercise even harder. To achieve a similar effect while running you would have to wear a weighted vest or backpack, but this would increase joint impact significantly.
