How to Install a Water Pump in a 1993 Accord

    Remove the Balance Shaft Belt

    • 1). Disconnect the battery ground cable. Lay it aside and make sure that it does not touch metal. Raise the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and support it with jack stands. Place the block of wood on the floor jack and push the floor jack under the oil pan. Jack it up just so it touches the bottom of the oil pan, to support the engine. Remove the left-front wheel using the lug wrench.

    • 2). Remove the lower splash guard and speed control actuator using the appropriate sockets. Leave the control cable connected to the speed control actuator -- just move it out of the way. Loosen the accessory drive belt tensioners, then lift the accessory drive belts off the pulleys. If the tensioners are slider brackets on an accessory such as an alternator, loosen the adjusting bolts and push the accessory toward the engine. If the tensioner uses a pulley, place the appropriate socket on the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley, then push the pulley away from the belt to loosen tension. If the pulley has a square hole in the center, rather than a bolt, use the square end of a ratchet to push the pulley away from the belt.

    • 3). Remove the left engine mount using the appropriate socket. Unsnap the alternator wiring from the valve cover. Remove the wiring from the back of the alternator using the appropriate wrench. Put the nuts back on the studs, so you don't lose the small nuts. Remove the alternator and its support bracket using the appropriate sockets. Remove the valve cover, upper timing belt cover and the power steering pump using the appropriate sockets. Do not remove the lines from the back of the power steering pump -- just move the pump out of the way. Work the dipstick tube back and forth and pull it out of the block.

    • 4). Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the white timing marks on the are lined up. Check the timing marks on the camshaft. The camshaft has three marks: the letters "UP," which should be at the 12 o'clock position, and two timing dots at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions on the camshaft sprocket.

    • 5). Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using the appropriate socket, then pull the crankshaft pulley off the nose of the crankshaft. Remove the tensioner adjusting bolt rubber seal and the lower timing belt cover using the appropriate sockets.

    • 6). Install the M6 x 100 mm bolt in the block to lock the tensioner arm. Loosen the tensioner nut, then push the tensioner away from the belt. Tighten the nut enough to hold the tensioner out of the way.

    • 7). Remove the balancer shaft belt by lifting it off the sprockets and pulleys. Unbolt and remove the balancer shaft sprocket.

Remove and Install the Timing Belt and Water Pump

    • 1). Check that the crankshaft timing marks are still lined up. Loosen the tensioner locking bolt. Loosen the tensioner nut, then push the tensioner away from the belt and tighten the nut enough to hold the tensioner out of the way. Lift the timing belt off the sprockets and pulleys. Make sure all the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft are lined up.

    • 2). Remove the bolts holding the water pump onto the block using the appropriate sockets. As you remove the bolts, line them up so you remember which bolt goes in which hole, as they are of different lengths. Pull the water pump and the O-ring off the block.

    • 3). Install the new O-ring on the water pump, then hold the water pump up to the engine block. Insert each bolt and tighten them four to five turns by hand. Check that the O-ring is still in place. Push the water pump against the block. Tighten the mounting bolts to 9 foot-pounds of torque. If you are working on a V6, tighten the 8 mm bolts to 16 foot-pounds of torque and the 6 mm bolts to 9 foot-pounds of torque.

    • 4). Install the timing belt, working in a clockwise direction, starting on the crankshaft sprocket, then over the top of the camshaft, keeping tension on the belt between the two sprockets. Work your way down to the outside of the water pump pulley, then inside the tensioner pulley.

    • 5). Loosen the tensioner nut. Allow the tensioner to put tension on the timing belt. Temporarily install the balancer shaft belt sprocket on the crankshaft, the lower timing belt cover and the crankshaft pulley.

    • 6). Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise six turns, until the white timing mark on the crankshaft is lined up at the 12 o'clock position. Make sure all three timing marks on the camshaft are lined up.

    • 7). Remove the crankshaft pulley, the lower timing belt cover and the balancer shaft belt sprocket. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until three teeth of the camshaft pass the timing mark. Loosen the tensioner nut, allowing the tensioner to put tension on the timing belt. Tighten the tensioner nut to 33 foot-pounds of torque. Tighten the tensioner locking bolt enough to hold the tensioner in place.

    Reinstall the Balance Shaft Belt

    • 1). Check that all the timing marks are lined up. Check that the balancer shaft timing marks are lined up at the 9 o'clock position on the left balancer shaft (as you are looking down at the engine). Remove the cylinder block plug and insert the M6 x 100 mm bolt into the plug hole.

    • 2). Rotate the rear balancer shaft until the bolt locates in the shaft. The bolt should slide in 2.9 inches. Install the balancer shaft belt sprocket on the crankshaft, then install the balancer shaft belt on the crankshaft sprocket, over the top of the two balancer shafts and under the tensioner.

    • 3). Loosen the tensioner nut and allow the tensioner to put tension on the belts. Remove the M6 x 100 locking bolt. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise one turn. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 33 foot-pounds of torque.

    • 4). Remove the tensioner locking bolt. Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 181 foot-pounds of torque.
