- 1). Approach the door that has the deadbolt you wish to remove from the inside, or the side with the thumb-turn latch. Look at the small shaft that connects the latch to the chassis. Identify a small hole in the shaft.
- 2). Take a sturdy paper clip and unfold one it so that you can insert the end of the paper clip into the small hole. Press into the hole while pulling gently on the thumb-turn latch to remove the latch.
- 3). Take your flat-blade screwdriver and insert it between the cover plate and the inside chassis. Look around the edge of the cover plate for a small space to insert the screwdriver. Gently pry the plate off. The mounting screws will be exposed.
- 4). Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two mounting screws. Pull the two halves of the deadbolt apart to separate them from the door.
- 5). Position yourself so you can access the side edge of the door. Identify the two screws that hold the latch mechanism in the door. Remove the screws with your screwdriver and slide the latch from the edge of the door.
- 6). Place all parts of the deadbolt and all screws into a container so that you can keep track of everything.
