How to Reduce the Noise of Vacuum Cleaners

    • 1). Plug the vacuum cleaner into the outlet and turn it on. Listen for where the noise is coming from. Noises in the base of the unit are often caused by obstructions in the suction area or brush roll. Noises where the engine is located may be mechanical problems with the motor.

    • 2). Read the user’s manual to find the warranty information for the vacuum. Almost all vacuum cleaner manufacturers offer a warranty or return policy. Before attempting to reduce the noise of the vacuum on your own, understand your options. Contact the manufacturer’s customer service center and explain your concerns about the vacuum. The customer service center may provide a simple solution or suggest how to have the vacuum repaired if its warranty is valid. This can include returning the vacuum or taking it to an authorized service provider for maintenance.

    • 3). Perform standard maintenance on the vacuum. Standard maintenance is not covered by its warranty. Items that require maintenance such as belts, bags and brush rollers can be cleaned or replaced. Obstructions in the base of the unit -- such as string, hair, carpet fibers and small metal pieces -- can cause loud noises in the vacuum. A dirty filter or full dirt storage container can also cause the vacuum to run louder.

    • 4). Maintain the vacuum routinely to reduce noise. Replace and clean filters. Remove the base plate to check for entangled string and other debris. Remove the debris and remove strings, hair and other obstructions by cutting them with scissors. Rinse dirt tank containers and change vacuum bags regularly. Wipe the outside of the vacuum with a damp cloth.
