- 1). Remove the suction hose from the floor cleaning head if your vacuum is an upright and is failing to remove dirt from a carpet. Switch the vacuum on and press your hand over the end of the hose to see if suction is operating normally. If the suction level at the hose is as it should be, examine the under side of the floor cleaning head for blockages.
- 2). Check the brush roll to ensure no threads or other material have become wrapped around it. If the brush roll's action is impeded, it will fail to loosen dirt in the carpet for the suction to remove. If something is wrapped round the brush roll, cut it and remove it completely. Remove any fluff or other debris from the brush roll. Check for any damage to the brush roll's drive belt.
- 3). Remove the suction hose from the extension wands if you are vacuuming a floor with a canister. Cover the end of the hose with your hand. If the suction feels normal, check the floor cleaning tool for blockages. Hold the extension wand up to the light. If you look into it and your view of the light at the other end is fully or partially obscured, it is blocked in some way. Use a wire clothes hanger to hook the blockage and pull it out.
- 4). Check for blockages in the nozzle you are using if you are cleaning surfaces above the floor with either a canister or an upright. Check also for any blockages at the point where the suction hose enters the cleaner. Ensure the hose is firmly in position at this point. If it is loose, the level of suction will be reduced. Examine the full length of the hose to ensure it has no holes or tears.
- 5). Examine the dust bag. If is is full, remove it from the vacuum, clean out the bag chamber and install a new bag. If your vacuum is a bagless model, empty the dust container, clean it and re-install it. Check all your vacuum's filters. Put disposable filters in the trash can if they are dirty and replace them with new ones. Clean permanent filters according to the instructions in the manual for your vacuum
