- 1). Use abrasive materials. Use a scrubbing pad, sandpaper or steel wool to scrape or scrub off the rust stains. A little elbow grease may be necessary for stubborn rust stains on the Pontiac. If you treat the rust when it first appears, a little scrubbing may be all that is needed. If the rust stain doesn't go away, add a little lubricant to the rust. Mineral oil is safe to use. Place a small amount on a scrubbing pad and rub it into the rust stains. Wait awhile for the rust to absorb the oil then scrub again. Wipe clean with a cloth.
- 2). Apply white vinegar. Use white vinegar on the car. According to the article "How to Create Homemade Rust Removers" on the Edubook website, ascetic acid in vinegar helps to remove the rust. Use a spray bottle to distribute the vinegar. Wait 15 to 30 minutes for the vinegar to soak in. Then scrub the rusted areas with the scrubbing pad. Use a cloth to wipe away the vinegar and rust.
- 3). Use naval jelly. After putting on work gloves, apply naval jelly to the rust stains on the Pontiac. Apply with a scrubbing pad. Allow the naval jelly to soak in. Scrub at the rust stains. The naval jelly has phosphoric acid that breaks down and dissolves the rust.
