- 1). Dig a post hole approximately 3 feet deep at the desired location. Use a rental post hole auger or digger if you don't own one.
- 2). Set the post in the hole and use a level to position it straight vertically. Drive stakes into the ground and use braces to hold the post in place. Fill the hole with a cement product such as Quikrete following manufacturer's instructions. Optionally, the hole can be filled with the dirt removed from the hole. Tamp the dirt into place with a heavy rod or sledgehammer.
- 3). Cut the post to the proper height using a small chain saw or reciprocating saw. Optionally, place a post cap on the post for decorative purposes and to protect the open grain on the top of the post.
- 4). Install a solar-operated light on the top or side of the post according to the manufacturer's instructions. Optionally add a small flower bed around the post to add color to the landscape. If you use climbing plants, add a trellis to the post for support.
