- 1). Fit an 8-inch long by 3/4-inch wide by 3/8-inch thick wood strip to one side of a 15-inch long by 8-inch wide by 3/4-inch thick board, 3-1/2 inches from the right side. The 8-inch length strip should run the length of the wood board.
- 2). Glue the wood strip in place, and then screw the pieces together with wood screws. This is the slide for cutting the bowling ball on the band saw. Fit the 8-inch strip in the miter gauge groove on the band saw platform.
- 3). Measure and mark an acrylic bowling ball 1/5 of the way up from the base. Measure and mark the bowling ball 1/5 of the way down from the top. These marks are the cut lines to make the flower planter.
- 4). Place the cupped ball holder on the wood board. Stand the bowling ball in the cupped holder so that one of the cut lines is in line with the band saw blade. Remove the bowling ball and screw the cupped holder into place on the wood board.
- 5). Cover the cupped holder with a rubber sheet or other non-skid material. Reposition the bowling ball on top of the rubber so that one of the cut lines is in line with the band saw blade.
- 6). Put on safety glasses. Turn on the band saw. Holding the bowling ball steady with your fingers securely away from the blade, slowly slide the wood board to advance the ball through the blade. Do not place your fingers in the bowling ball holes.
- 7). Reposition the bowling ball so that the remaining cut line is positioned against the band saw blade. Follow the process to slice the bowling ball on the cut line. The bowling ball now has a flat top and bottom.
- 8). Hollow out the top half of the inside core of the bowling ball using a rotary drill with a saw blade attachment. Wear safety glasses as you make lines in the core material with the saw, then chisel out the material to make the desired interior of the planter.
- 9). Drill three to four 1/4-inch diameter holes straight through the remaining core of the bowling ball to make drainage holes for the flower planter.
- 10
Cut a section of plastic liner to fit inside the hollowed out section of the bowling ball. Attach the plastic liner to the inside core using spray adhesive. Puncture the area of the liner that covers the drainage holes.
