- 1). Move any furniture or other obstructions from any corner of the carpet. Choose a corner that is less exposed and the most easily accessible.
- 2). Grasp the corner of the carpeting with a pair of pliers. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from any potential nails and to get a better grip on the pliers.
- 3). Pull away enough carpet to allow you to view what is underneath. If you see carpet padding glued to the subfloor, gently pull away part of this as well with the pliers.
- 4). Examine the subfloor. Use a flashlight if necessary. If you see hardwood under the carpeting, expose the rest if desired. To replace the carpet, set it back into the original position. Stretch the carpet back into the baseboard and reattach it to the existing tack strip with a knee-kicker, a special tool used to install carpet. Purchase or rent this tool at a hardware or home improvement store.
