- 1). Click the "Start" button and choose "All Programs," then "Accessories" and then "Paint." The Paint window appears.
- 2). Click the "File" icon in the upper left and choose "Open" to display a standard Open dialog box. Make sure that the drop-down in the lower right says "All Picture Files" or "GIF."
- 3). Browse to the GIF file that you want to edit and double-click to load it into Paint.
- 4). Control the display of your graphic by clicking the "View" tab. Click the "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out" buttons to enlarge or shrink the display, or click "Full Screen" to have the image fill the screen. You can add drawing aids by clicking a checkmark into "Rulers" and "Gridlines."
- 5). Crop the image if you want to eliminate extraneous borders. Click the "Select" button and draw a rectangle around the image area you want to save. Click "Crop" to remove the image beyond the selection.
- 6). Adjust the image as needed by clicking "Resize" and specifying a new height and width or "Rotate" to turn the picture in specified increments.
- 7). Edit the image as needed by choosing additional tools from the button bar. Among the selections are brushes or a pencil for drawing directly on the picture, a paint bucket for filling large areas with color, and an eraser for deleting parts of the graphic. You can also add different graphics from the Shapes area, while controlling the line size with the "Size" button.
- 8). Specify the color used by your tool by clicking a selection from the Colors area. You can also customize a color by clicking "Edit Colors." This displays the Edit Colors dialog box, where you can define the numerical values of a pigment.
- 9). Click the "File" icon and choose "Save As" to save your edits under a different name. A standard Save As dialog box appears. Browse to the location where you want to save your changes and enter a new name in the "File Name" box. Then click the "Save" button to save your work.
