Second graders will have a festive time at a heart-themed Valentine's Day party. A Valentine's Day party can encourage kids to express their feelings of love and friendship for classmates, teachers or friends. Kids will adore this special day that promotes kindness and love. There's no need to be demure, go all out with a heart theme that will tie the party together and make it a memorable day for the children. - Decorate using a variety of Valentine-themed colors such as pink, red and white. Use balloons, streamers and hearts cut out of poster board and construction paper. Glitter and confetti will look dazzling on tables covered with red cloths. Hang paper garlands, construction paper cupids and make hanging conversation hearts out of paper that say things like "Kiss Me," "Love U" and "Friends."
- A Valentine's Day party calls for heart-shaped decorations--food included. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or pimento cheese sandwiches. You can also use heart-shaped molds to create Krispie treats or gelatin jigglers. Cut cheese slices into hearts for cheese and crackers. For drinks, make Shirley Temples by adding cherry syrup to lemon lime soda, and garnish with maraschino cherries. Make heart-shaped brownies for dessert and offer Valentine's candy as well.
- Play Valentine's Day bingo. Make cards for kids on your computer or by hand. Let them use candy for markers and give a sweet treat to the winners. Have parents send an empty shoe box or tissue box with each kid to the party. Hand out craft supplies such as construction paper, markers, stickers, paper doilies, glue and rhinestones. Let kids decorate their own Valentine card boxes and then hand out their cards. Alternately, you can pre-cut paper hearts in half before the party. Use distinct cuts to make the hearts like puzzle pieces and have kids find their matching heart partner.
- Decorate plain gift bags with stickers spelling out the kids' names and fill them with Valentine-themed treats. Heart pencils, stickers, erasers, candy and jewelry are suitable items. Boys might like red miniature cars and girls would enjoy a bracelet. Both boys and girls will enjoy a sweet, small stuffed animal in their bags.
