- 1). Plug one end of the first Ethernet cable into the cable modem's "Ethernet" port. Plug the other end of the first Ethernet cable into the router's "Uplink" or "LAN" port.
- 2). Plug the second Ethernet cable into one of the free ports on the router. Plug the other end of the second Ethernet cable into the computer's network adapter.
- 3). Open the computer's web browser program. To verify that the router is working properly and that the cables are plugged in correctly, type the address for a well-known website (such as "ehow.com") and press "Enter." If the website does not appear within thirty seconds, check the Ethernet cables to ensure that these are plugged in correctly.
- 4). Type the router's IP address (typically "http://192.168.1.1"; see "Tips" for more information) into the web browser search field. Enter the router username and password, and press "Enter." This will open the router administration screen.
- 5). Select the "Wireless Security" menu from the router administration screen, and select "WPA" as the security mode. Enter a password in the "WPA Shared Key" field, and click "Save Settings." Write this password down and keep it in a secure location.
- 6). Close the browser window to exit the router administration screen.
