- 1). Fold a section of paper towel in half to create a double thickness of towel. A single layer is not recommended, as it will not hold moisture well. A double layer remains moist and provides the environment that seeds need to germinate.
- 2). Moisten the paper towel with a spray bottle, or submerge it in water and wring out excess water. The towel should be moist but not dripping.
- 3). Fold the towel in half again so that it forms a square. Open the fold like a book. Place the towel on a solid surface, such as a table or work area.
- 4). Place the zinnia seeds, spaced 1/4- to 1/2-inch apart, over the right-hand portion of the paper towel. Seeds placed too closely develop tangled roots as the seeds germinate.
- 5). Fold the paper towel as though you were closing a book over the seeds. Smooth the towel with your hands, and press lightly to ensure the moist towel contacts the seeds.
- 6). Insert the folded towel inside a food storage bag, and seal the bag. Leave one corner open to allow for air circulation and prevent issues with excessive moisture.
- 7). Place the bag in an area that receives gentle bottom heat, such as the top of an electric appliance. The bag and the seeds should be kept warm but not hot, as too much heat may damage the seeds.
- 8). Check the bag daily for germination. Germination time ranges from 3 to 10 days depending on the temperature.
- 9). Remove germinated seeds with tweezers, using care not to injure the new roots. Plant the seeds in a prepared bed so that they are barely covered with soil. Keep them moist until plants are established.
