- 1). Perform an image search for a smiley face. Images with a blank background will be easiest to work with. Once you find a smiley face that is big enough for you, save the file to your hard drive.
- 2). Launch your preferred word-processing software. Import the smiley face image into the document. Resize the image to fit the page, if necessary. The menu locations for importing and resizing images will depend on what software you are using. Some ASCII artists find it helpful to remove the color from the image and/or reduce the opacity.
- 3). Create a text box over the smiley face. The smiley face image is now your template. Choose a font for your image. Fixed-width fonts are best for ASCII art. Some commonly used examples include Courier, Monaco, and Lucida Console. Select a standard font size, such as 10 or 12 point.
- 4). Type over the smiley face image. Experiment to see which letters work best. For the eyes and mouth, you can either leave these areas blank, or make the text bold in order to make it stand out from the surrounding text. When finished, delete the template image.
