How to Clean Entry Mats

Whether you have an entry mat in your home, office, rental property, restaurant or show room, there are important things to consider before giving it a good cleaning. Depending on the environment, your mat most likely has certain features that can weather the type of wear it gets on a daily basis. Special features include fabric type, backing, slip-resistant material and design.
Mats can be a tricky thing to clean, but there are certain steps you can take to ensure the cleanliness of your mats. Most people do not consistently clean their mats, leading to build-up and, ultimately, a shorter lifespan. Experts say that as long as you take certain precautions, however, your entry mat will stand the test of time, no matter the environment.

1. Clean according to location. If the mat is placed in an area that is heavily trafficked, in order to prevent dirt and sediment build-up, it should be sprayed down with a hose at least once a week.

2. Shake it out often. Again, depending on the location, the amount of times you need to do this will vary. If it's simply outside your back door, once a week will suffice. However, if the mat is in the middle of a restaurant kitchen where food and drinks are constantly being transported over it, it needs to be taken out daily for sanitary reasons.

3. Vacuum. In an office environment, logo mats are typically present in the main lobby and hallway areas. In order to maintain the best logo mats possible, they need to be vacuumed multiple times a week. Remember, clients are the ones seeing these on a daily basis and these mats are a direct representation of your company, even with their lowly existence.

4. Stain removal. Because stains happen, and more frequently than we like, a good stain removal system should be put in order to preserve the life of your best entry mats. How you remove the stain depends on the type of stain incurred:
€ Wet soils - Use a brush and vac system. Several tries might be in order to effectively remove the stain.
€ Dry soils - Use a vacuum with an adjustable brush. It will give you the best chance at agitating the stain.
€ Dry, crusty stains - Soak the mat in hot water with a mild soap solution for 30 minutes or so. This should be enough time to gently lift the crusty stuff off of the mat and allow for you to easily scrub it clean upon removal from the water.
