Well it's almost springtime again here in Chicagoland and what we are gunna do here is going to save you some time and hopefully some money too, and lets face it, right now everyone would like to save a buck or two.
What I'd like to start out by doing is explaining some pointers on what to look for and what to do when you find something that isn't quite right with your garage door or garage door opener.
Number 1.Lower your garage door with the garage door opener.
Number 2.Pull the red release rope so you can operate the garage door manually.
Number 3.You should be able to lift with ease and very little effort whatsoever.
Number 4.If door is sticking or binding oil all moving parts with 3 in 1 oil, sewing machine oil or some type of actual oil.
Number 5.Parts that need oil are:all hinges,all rollers,all shiv wheels,end bearings,springs.
Number 6.Tighten ALL loose hardware. This is gunna be especially true if you are the owner of a wooden garage door.Try not to overtighten and strip nuts and bolts.
Number 7.If door is still heavy or binding after oil job and tightening of loose hardware make sure tracks are not to tight. If further adjustments are neccesary please call for service.
Number 8.Check all hinges for cracks and wear marks replace if neccesary.
Number 9.Check the cables for wear marks ,fraying or severly rusted at bottoms.PLEASE NOTE CABLES ARE UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE AND CAN SEVERLY INJURE YOU ,DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE WITHOUT EXPERIENCE.If any of these symptom are visible I recommend replacement.
Number 10.Check and replace worn out rollers.WARNING DO NOT CHANGE BOTTOM ROLLERS WITHOUT EXPERIENCE.BOTTOM BRACKETS UNDER EXTREME FORCE AND CAN CAUSE INJURY.LET A PRO CHANGE OUT BOTTOMS FOR YOU.All others can be changed by simply lowering garage door, taking hinge off, roller out ,new roller in ,hinge back on.
Number 11.If everything is good (hopefully it is!) Now its time to check your garage door opener.
Number 12. Check loose bolts on opener arm and mounting points on door, & mount to header.Tighten where neccesary.
Number13..With garage door attached, close garage door on a 2x4 that is laying in the center on the floor, this is a safety check to make sure the reverse mechanism is properly working. If it reverses your golden you just saved a service call & possibly an accident later. If it doesn't reverse, try making adjustments with the down force and down limit on garage door opener. You may have to pull the owner's manual out and do a little reading since there are many garage door openers on the market.
Well that should doer.Im sure we might have missed something, but I think we gat most of it covered.
