- 1). Spray paint the location of the fence on the ground. Go around any immovable objects such as trees, rocks or buildings.
- 2). Measure the fence's length to calculate how much cable and how many pipes you need.
- 3). Dig holes for the fence posts every three feet with a post-hole digger. Dig the holes deep enough to hold at least one-third of the post.
- 4). Prepare a batch of concrete, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- 5). Fill the first hole about halfway with concrete and set the first post into the hole. Check the post for plumb (vertically straight), and fill the rest of the hole with the concrete. Check the post for plumb again before setting the next post.
- 6). Install the rest of the posts, using the same method. Allow the concrete to set for at least four days.
- 7). Drill holes in the posts six inches apart for the cables. Use a drill bit designed to drill through steel.
- 8). Place the loop caps on top of the fence posts, and slide the sections of rail through the caps. Connect different sections of rail with top rail sleeves.
- 9). Install the fittings on the end posts that lock the cables into place. The installation process for the fittings, which usually are washers, lag nuts and bolts, can vary by manufacturer, so read the provided instructions.
- 10
Install the cables by running them through the holes on all of the posts and through the fittings on the end posts. - 11
Tighten the cables with an adjustable wrench until the slack is gone. - 12
Remove the excess length of cable that extends past the fittings by sawing it off with a hacksaw and grinding away the edges with a grinding disk. - 13
Tighten the cables with the adjustable wrench, beginning with the middle cables and working out towards the ends in an alternating pattern. For instance, start with the middle cable, then move to the one above it. After that, go to the cable below the middle one, then back up to the cable above the first one you tightened.
