- 1). Familiarize yourself with the level by testing it on flat surfaces so you can see the way the bubble in the center appears when it is showing level and non-level surface.
- 2). Place the level on a surface you believe to be truly level. This means that it is level and flat to the best of your knowledge.
- 3). Leave the level on the surface you are testing. If in fact the surface is level and flat, the bubble will remain in the center and fill most of the cavity containing the bubble.
- 4). Remember that cold and heat affect the material forming the bubble in the level. Do not keep your hands on the level for any longer than necessary. Also, the bubble will contract somewhat in cold conditions and will have a tiny gap at either end of the container holding the bubble. If the surface is level, the gaps at both ends will be the same.
- 5). Find the chart that comes with your level and familiarize yourself with the measurements that show the degree of accuracy and the precise angle of the surface you are trying to level.
