- 1). Park the lawn tractor on a hard, flat surface. Leave the lawn tractor on and let it run for five minutes before turning off the power.
- 2). Place a drain pan underneath the tractor's drain valve. Spread a newspaper underneath the drain pan in case any stray drops miss the receptacle.
- 3). Remove the cap over the tractor's drain valve. Insert a plastic tube into the valve or rotate it to the left to start draining the oil. Allow all of the oil to empty into the drain pan.
- 4). Replace the cap on the drain valve.
- 5). Remove the dipstick from the oil intake. Pour 1 quart of fresh oil into the engine.
- 6). Insert the dipstick fully into the oil tank. Pull it out and wipe it with a rag. Look at the dipstick to check whether more oil is needed. Add more oil as necessary until the oil level in the tank is even with the fill line on the dipstick.
- 7). Replace the dipstick and wipe up any spilled oil with a rag.
