How to Do Hall Lighting

Hang a sparkling chandelier in an entrance hallway to your home for a dramatic first impression. Crystal chandeliers typically consist of arms and hanging crystals and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some candelabra-style arms hold small light bulbs. Consider a glass chandelier with a fused-glass base sometimes called Tiffany pendant lights.

    • 2). Install a ceiling lantern for lighting and tasteful decor in a hallway. Ceiling lanterns come in different shapes, styles, and sizes and hang from a chain consisting of links so lanterns can be positioned high or low depending on the ceiling height of the hallway. Coordinate your ceiling lantern with your decor style, whether it be elegant or rustic.

Use wall sconces strategically placed in a hallway to light up the space effectively. Finishes for wall sconces include nickel, gold, bronze, black, brass/antique, pewter, white, and aluminum. Wall sconces come in any number of styles and shapes representing modern, contemporary and traditional looks. A small hallway may only need one or two sconces, whereas a long hallway may need three or four sconces on each side of the hall.

    • 4). Light up your hallway using uplighting. Uplights typically involve the use of PAR cans or LED lights. PAR is short for parabolic aluminized reflector, a high-powered light bulb in front of a reflector such as a mirror. Purchase PAR cans by their opening sizes such as Par 26 up to Par 64. A Par 64 light will brighten up a space 8 feet in diameter. Par lights are white, however you can add a plastic film over the light of various colors.

    • 5). Choose a combination of lighting options for a large and very dark hallway. You may have a ceiling light that is flush to the ceiling plus two wall sconces, for example, or a chandelier at the entrance of the hallway in addition to some ceiling lanterns. Alternatively, you may have a small table with an accent or table lamp on it, in addition to some uplights.
