So you just installed wordpress and don't know what to do? Let me give you the first 5 simple steps that I have taken with this site and every other site I have worked on.
*Before I get to the top 5, be warned that creating a successful wordpress blog doesn't just happen over night.
Once you are up and running you are going to have to get traffic (I will write an article on that soon!) and constantly update your site.

Design! The standard wordpress theme that comes with a fresh install is hideous.
Visitors to your site will tend to leave quickly if your design doesn't look professional and organized.
I've noticed that the best wordpress blogs either don't even look like wordpress or are super clean and organized.
Another thing to think about is the style you want to use; one column, two column, even 4?.
How do you know what to use? An easy way is to try and design what you want your blog to look like in your head.
More than likely someone has a free design close to what you want.
**And remember take your time and get what you want.
When looking for a design, people tend to rush and just put something up.

The next thing your going to want to do is get some plugins to spice up your blog and increase its functionality.
Plugins range anywhere from rss feed generators to random quote generators) Here is my top 3 List of plugins:
This is the best plugin for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that I have yet to find.
Second, Google Sitemap creates a simple xml sitemap for you blog.
(A sitemap is a list of all the url's within a site).
This url can be given to google, they then index you into their search engine.
Lastly, Feedsmith Feedburner will give you more organized control over your RSS feed.
This is used through feedburner.
com (get an account, highly recommended).
