- Spyware is any type of software that spies on you. A very dangerous spyware program is a key logger. Key loggers monitor every keystroke you type; they can capture passwords, bank account information and anything else you type.
- Many people consider adware and spyware similar; they are often used in conjunction with each other to monitor your surfing habits and cause pop-ups to appear. Sometimes these pop-ups can become so numerous they interfere with the functioning of your computer, redirect your browser and install unwanted software.
- It is estimated that more than 60 percent of all computers are infested with spyware and/or adware. Many users do not even know they have these malicious programs on their computers.
- If you use public computers or computers at work, you should be aware that these computers may have spyware installed on them. The owners of those computers frequently install spyware to monitor the users. The owner can monitor the computer's real-time from a remote location without your knowledge.
- Antispyware software is designed to remove spyware and stop spyware infestation. According to the Antispyware Coalition, the two best antispyware products are PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Kaspersky Internet Security (see Resources).
