- 1). Visit Grand Canyon National Park after tourist season. Arizona is the Grand Canyon State, after all. The trails will be less crowded, fall foliage will be in full color and the temperature on the South Rim will be invigorating, especially early in the day.
- 2). Have some fun with Arizona’s agricultural industry. Visit a commercial orchard and pick apples or pumpkins. Apple Annie’s Orchard near Willcox and Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek near Phoenix are two of your many options.
- 3). Shop at a farmers’ market. You’ll find one in almost every city and town in Arizona. A trip to the farmers' market in Bisbee is especially entertaining. Previously an old mining town, Bisbee has become an artist colony. At the farmers’ market, vendors sell produce, plants and essential oils. Local musicians provide great background music and shoppers cuddle puppies from the local animal shelter, pick through used books and get great deals on fresh produce.
- 4). Head for the hills and watch the leaves change color. Ramsey Canyon near Sierra Vista has a gorgeous display and the Nature Conservancy will give you access to an easy trail. Take a guided nature walk at the Hart Prairie Preserve near Flagstaff; it’s an easy walk but not suitable for wheelchairs or pets. Try to spot bighorn sheep at the Kofa Wildlife Refuge, between Yuma and Quartzite in western Arizona.
- 5). See a baseball game. The Arizona Diamondbacks play in Phoenix, and in nice weather they keep the roof of the stadium open. If you’ve never seen a swimming pool in a major league ballpark, you have to check it out. Arizona is home to three universities, so there is plenty of football in autumn. And don’t forget high school football: the weather is great, the price is right and you’ll see some great competitors.
