- 1). Apply a bag of ice to the injury right away, if possible, and apply pressure to the ear. This will stop the swelling and prevent that cauliflower look (white, folded-in skin). If the ear is red, irritated or puffy, seek medical attention right away.
- 2). Consult with a doctor. He or she will need to assess the situation and determine what further action is necessary. Typically, your doctor will have to make an incision in your ear and drain excess blood and fluid. Your doctor will also have to reconnect the cartilage and perichondrium together with a compress that you'll have to wear for about 10 days to prevent fluid from building up again.
- 3). Take antibiotics to prevent infection from occurring. Also refrain from any activity that may rupture the ear again and cause fluid and blood to build up, causing even more pain and a greater possibility that the injury will be permanent without the help of surgery.
- 4). Seek surgery if you have had cauliflower ear for a while without seeking prior medical attention and are looking to treat it. Doctors will drain your ear, then thin the cartilage and reposition the skin to cover the cartilage. This is an expensive cosmetic surgery that may not be covered by insurance.
