- 1). Confess all known sins to God. The Bible says that sins separate people from God; "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear." (Isaiah 59:2). Because sin separates people from God, it is necessary to stop sinning and decide to change your ways. This is called repentance. By practicing repentance, you are preparing yourself for the presence of the Holy Spirit.
- 2). Learn about God. Orthodox Christianity believes that the Holy Spirit is one person out of the three persons in the Holy Trinity. Consequently, Christians believe that by reading the Bible, they can learn about the nature of God and the Holy Spirit. Make a Bible reading plan that will bring you through the entire Bible in a year. This typically involves reading around three chapters everyday. By learning about God, you will prepare yourself for the presence of his Holy Spirit.
- 3). Pray to God. This is one of the best ways to practice for the presence of the Holy Spirit. By bringing yourself into God's presence, you allow yourself to be changed by God. Christians believe that humanity is very sinful and that nothing good resides in their flesh (Romans 7:18). It is therefore important to bring yourself into God's presence so that the sinful part of you may be put to death (Colossians 3:5). By doing this everyday, you are preparing yourself for God.
