Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains on California's border with Nevada, South Lake Tahoe is an outdoor recreation mecca. The city of 24,000 has three nearby ski resorts for winter sports enthusiasts, and once the snow melts the area abounds with opportunities for fishing, hiking and camping. South Lake Tahoe itself has no casino hotels, but you can find these just across the border in the town of Stateline, Nevada.

Harvey's Lake Tahoe

Harvey's Lake Tahoe offers the gambler plenty of ways to try his luck. The casino features slot machines, keno, table games, poker and sports betting in an 88,000-square-foot casino. The 740-room hotel offers standard double rooms and luxury suites. Rooms from the 15th to 19th floors have views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains. The hotel boasts seven restaurants, 10 bars and a children's day camp. 19 Kitchen Bar, on the 19th floor, features views of the lake and mountains and serves full meals. The Montbleu's 40,000-square-foot casino has table games, slot and video machines, sports and horse wagering, and eight tables of Texas Hold'em in its poker room. The 440 rooms at Montbleu feature kitchenettes, minibars, in-room safes and over-sized tubs. The hotel is home to seven restaurants, including Ciera Steak and Chophouse, with four diamonds from the American Automobile Association. The nightclub, Opal, features body painting and go-go dancers, while the circle bar at HQ is home to a more relaxing atmosphere. An indoor pool, a health club, tennis courts and an outdoor arena that hosts professional volleyball tournaments await the active guest.

Slots lovers will enjoy Horizon's 42,000-square-foot casino dedicated to slot machines. The hotel's 539 rooms come standard with minibars and refrigerators. The resort's three restaurants, which include a buffet, will suit a variety of budgets; a cabaret, lounge and nightclub round out the resort's entertainment scene. Horizon's in-house bike and ski rental shop will help the outdoor enthusiast gear up, while those looking for relaxation can enjoy one of three hot tubs, order an in-room massage or visit the salon. Guests have access to the hotel's large outdoor pool and a movie theater.
