How to Make Stained Glass Frames

    • 1). Outline two pieces of stained glass with a grease pencil so that they measure one inch wide by nine inches long. Outline two additional glass pieces to measure one inch wide by five inches long.

    • 2). Score each of the four pieces along the outline with your glass cutter. Pistol grip cutters hold glass oil in the handles and provide the right amount of lubrication as you score the glass. Scoring means to press the tip of the cutter firmly against the glass and drag it in one direction along the line to be cut. You are not actually cutting the glass; you are simply breaking the surface.

    • 3). Clamp your running pliers on one end of the scoring line and press down firmly. This will separate the glass along the scoring line, effectively cutting the stained glass. Cut all four pieces of your picture frame. File the edges with a diamond file to remove any loose shards of glass. Wrap the perimeter of each piece in copper tape.

    • 4). Lay the five inch by seven inch clear glass on a fire resistant surface. Place the nine inch long strips of glass on either side of the clear glass and the five inch strips on the top and the bottom of the clear glass to create your frame.

    • 5). Working on one side at a time, brush the strips with flux where they meet. Run a line of solder to connect the glass strips to each other and to the clear glass. When you have joined the glass pieces together, add flux to the outside perimeter of your frame and run a line of solder around the perimeter to finish the frame. Let the frame cool, then flip it over and solder the back where the nine inch strips meet the seven inch strips.

    • 6). Add the 5 inch strips of "U" came to the top and the bottom of the clear glass panel and the two seven inch strips to the sides around the clear glass. The came strips provide the groove that will hold your picture and the backing. Attach them to the solder around the clear glass with another strip of solder.

    • 7). Add spray adhesive to the cardboard and apply the felt. Add your picture to the frame and place the backing on top. Attach the picture hanger to the back side of the stained glass frame.
