What Are the Dangers of Mold Found in Homes?

    Types of Mold

    • Examples of the type of mold that grow inside the home include aspergillus, penicillium, alternaria and cladosporium. They typically grow in areas with high moisture.

    Health Problems

    • Mold induces symptoms such as rashes, wheezing, nasal congestion and eye irritation in people sensitive to the fungus. Severe symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness and fever can occur in those with asthma.

    Those At Risk

    • Mold poses a danger to people with asthma, a mold allergy or an impaired immune system as well as pregnant women and infants. People with a lung disease and an impaired immune system may develop a fungal infection.

    Signs of Mold

    • An earthy or musty odor is often a sign of mold buildup in your home. Visible symptoms include colored, fuzzy spots on the walls, ceiling and around pipes.

    Removal

    • Wearing rubber gloves, spray mold with a mild detergent and let it sit for ten minutes, then scrub.

    Prevention

    • A ten percent bleach solution slows mold growth.
