The Best Ways to Froth Milk for a Latte

    Steam Wand

    • Steam wands are featured on all espresso machines. This is perhaps the best way to steam milk, as it's quick and efficient. Place your milk into a metal pitcher with a thermometer on the side. Make sure the tip of the thermometer is in the milk. Place the pitcher of milk under the steam wand and lower the wand into the milk as you slowly turn the dial and activate the steam pressure. Start with the wand submerged in the milk for a few seconds and slowly bring the tip toward the top of the milk. The mixture of air, milk and steam will create a foamy layer. Be careful not to let the milk temperature exceed 150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit or you run the risk of burning it.

    Hand Steamer

    • Purchase a hand steamer from your nearest kitchen supply or retail store. These are generally anywhere from $15 to $30, depending on the features that you would like. All hand steamers come with directions as each model functions a little differently from the rest. Some steamers take batteries while others require an electrical outlet. Use this steamer as you would use a steam wand that is connected to an espresso machine.

    Top of Stove

    • Heat a burner to medium to low heat. Place the milk into a pot and bring the milk to a boil. Stir so that the milk doesn't burn. Let the milk boil for 30 for 45 seconds and remove from heat. Lift the pot up three inches or so and gently smack the bottom of the pot on the counter to bring all of the bubbles to the surface. The milk froth will now be the top layer while your steamed milk will make up the bottom layer.

    Microwave

    • Locate a microwavable jar with a lid. Fill the jar no more than halfway to the top with milk as you need room for the foam to expand. Fasten the lid tightly and shake for 30 to 60 seconds so that the milk becomes full of bubbles. Remove the lid and immediately microwave the milk in the jar for 30 to 40 seconds. The foam should rise to the top, so feel free to the pour the milk into your coffee while using a spoon to hold back the foam. Spoon the foam onto your latte for the final step.
