How to Replace a Hub Bearing in a Silverado 1500

    • 1). Move the car jack underneath the frame near front wheel on your Chevrolet Silverado. Raise the vehicle off the ground. Place a jack stand under the frame for added support in case the jack fails.

    • 2). Remove the four lug bolts which fix the wheel onto the axle using a lug wrench. Lift the wheel away from the vehicle. Ensure you do not damage the tire.

    • 3). Locate the bolts which secure the brake caliper to its bracket. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts and lift the caliper out of its bracket. Slide a wire coat hanger through the spring coil on the brake caliper. This will prevent you from handing the brake caliper by the brake line. Hanging the caliper by the brake line will result in damage to the brake line. This will reduce the performance of your brakes.

    • 4). Take the rotor off its drive train spindle by removing the nut from the back of the rotor with the wrench and sliding it away with your hands.

    • 5). Locate the bolts on the barrel of the wheel hub which secure it to the steering knuckle. Remove the bolts and pull the wheel hub free. Slide the inner and outer bearing seals from the wheel hub.

    • 6). Open up the seals and remove the old bearings. Discard the bearings. Use a dry cloth to wipe away all of the old grease from inside the seals. Coat the new bearings in grease and place them into the seals. Close the seals and slide them back into the wheel hub. Reattach the wheel hub by securing the mounting bolts to attach it to the steering knuckle.

    • 7). Replace the rotor back on the spindle and reattach the retaining nut. Remove the wire from the brake caliper coil and slide it back into the bracket. Secure it with the mounting bolts. Place the wheel on the axle and reattach the lug nuts with a lug wrench. Repeat the process on the rest of the wheels.
