- 1). Unscrew the gas cap to relieve pressure from the fuel filter.
- 2). Crawl under the Avalanche at the driver door. Locate the fuel filter directly under the driver door, attached to the inside of the frame rail. One end of the fuel filter has a fuel line that is attached by a standard hex nut; the other end of the filter is attached to the fuel line by a quick-connect plastic fitting.
- 3). Slide the fluid catch pan underneath the fuel filter. Loosen the nut with a 5/8-inch wrench. Finish unscrewing the nut with your fingers until the nut is backed all the way out of the fuel filter. Slide the fuel line out of the fuel filter.
- 4). Remove the other fuel line with the fuel line quick-disconnect tool. Slide the end of the tool into the head of the fuel line where it connects to the fuel filter. Press the tool inward until you feel the fuel line unlock from the fuel filter. Gently pull the fuel line off the fuel filter port. Let the fuel lines hang down toward the fluid catch pan.
- 5). Slide the fuel filter out of the black plastic bracket. Slide the new fuel filter into the bracket, with the arrow on the fuel filter facing the engine.
- 6). Screw the fuel line nut back onto the fuel filter port and tighten it down with the 5/8-inch wrench.
- 7). Slide the other fuel line straight onto the fuel filter port until you feel the fuel line lock onto the plastic clip on the fuel filter port. Gently pull back on the fuel line to ensure that it is locked in place.
- 8). Slide the fluid catch pan out from under the Avalanche. Screw the gas cap back onto the gas tank.
- 9). Crank the engine and inspect the fuel lines and fuel filter while the engine is running. Turn the engine off.
