New Orleans Musicians and Music:
New Orleans has always been deeply connected to her music and musicians. You can never go far in any direction of New Orleans without hearing music. I have a friend who moved here permanently after a vacation because he "heard the sax playing." I knew exactly what he meant. Music in the air was always something we New Orleanians took for granted.
Hurricane Katrina Scattered Our People and Musicians:
After Hurricane Katrina, when we were all scattered all over the country, I thought for one brief moment the special place I call home was lost forever. But, the opposite happened. It's seems that the country began to realize that we were about to lose a treasure, a unique cultural resource in this country and in this world.
The Rise of New Orleans Musicians:
No group understood the potential loss more than New Orleans musicians. Although their homes and in many cases, instruments were lost, and they were living outside of the city, they still played New Orleans music where ever they found themselves. In spite of, or--maybe because of the potential loss and a serious case of homesickness, the musicians of New Orleans rose even higher and there was a resurgence of New Orleans music.
Allen Toussaint living in New York, teamed up with Elvis Costello on the "The River in Reverse," a highly acclaimed album. Irma Thomas, the Queen of New Orleans Soul Music, won a Grammy for best contemporary blues album with "After the Rain." Irwin Mayfield lost his father in Katrina.
Yet, Mayfield who is internationally known for his unrivelled talent on the trumpet, played a beautiful and moving concert for us all just a few weeks after Katrina.
The "We Shall Not Be Moved" Project:
Now national musicians have joined New Orleans musicians in a project designed to heal, uplift and unify the people of New Orleans, and the world, helping us all turn the page once and for all, release the images of devastation to flow downstream, and stride into the future with spirits soaring.
"We Shall Not Be Moved" is the "We Are The World of New Orleans" and is under production now. For all the information and to participate, go to the official website.
