How exactly is it that the male of the species is born with a gene that makes him love cars? I don’t claim to know the science behind it, but I myself have witnessed this phenomenon over and over…and over and over…again. So, is it any coincidence that car shows coincide with Father’s Day? I think not:
A couple of other wineries are having BBQ on Fathers Day as well:
- This year (2008) the annual Peggy Sue’s All-American Cruise takes place from June 12 to 17. This is Sonoma County's largest car show with American made models dating from the early 1900's to 1976, including the horseless carriage, restored vintage and antique cars and trucks, street stock and street modified, hotrods, roadsters and customs.
You can view the cars, dance to 50s favorites, and enjoy a full line-up of entertainment, including some “blasts from the past”: Special guests include the actors who played Timmy in the “Lassie” show and Christopher in “The Partridge Family” (both are Sonoma County residents).
Saturday night is the big, signature event when all the cars go cruising through the streets of downtown Santa Rosa. Dress up in your jeans and tees or poodle skirts and bobby socks and watch along the parade route: Staging for the parade will be on 5th Street, entering from Brookwood. The Parade will run from 'B' Street down 4th Street to Hope St and returning back down to 'B' Street by way of 5th Street.
- If those aren’t enough cars for you, on Sunday you can see hundreds of vintage and new cars, trucks and hot rods at the 14th Annual Father’s Day Show & Shine Car Show at Juilliard Park in Santa Rosa, (map) 9 am to 4 pm. Class trophies will be awarded and there will be food, drinks, live music, raffle, and contests. Admission is free for spectators. (707) 546-5500 or (707) 543-3354. Proceeds benefit scholarships through the nonprofit Northern California Engineering Contractors Association and the Maintenance Superintendents Association.
- You can view even more classic cars at the annual King of the Castle event at Ledson. There will also be a BBQ and live music. 11am to 4pm Sunday; $25; 7335 Sonoma Highway; (707) 833-2330
