Electrical Code Rules for Pool Pumps

    Voltage and Proper Receptacles

    • Understanding what voltage your pool pump runs on is paramount. According to INYO Pools, pumps are usually wired for either 230V or 115V. It is important to know what voltage will be going from the home's circuit breaker to the pump. The power receptacle must be a single twist-lock outlet, with a weatherproof cover that can be closed when the plug is in. Also, according to Gunther Home Inspections, the circuit line for the pump motor must be continuous---meaning not connected to other receptacles.

    Grounding the Pump

    • Grounding the pump's motor is important for safety reasons during storms or power surges. Water Ace recommends a permanent ground connection to the motor using a conductor no smaller than 8.4mm. This conductor should be attached from the wire connector and grounded to a metal, underground water pipe or lead in the service panel, according to Water Ace. The manufacturers recommend grounding to a pipe or wall casing that is at least 10 feet long.

    Wiring and Warnings

    • Gunther Home Inspections claims that wires used for the pump should not be less than #12 AWG insulated copper grounded wire. They also stipulate that the wires for the pool pump and other receptacles be single strand wires instead of cables. Even if a person feels comfortable wiring their own pool pump, national and state electrical codes must be followed to ensure the safety and legality of electrical work. Dave Rongey of Ask the Electrician advises that a person contact a qualified electrician to double check all work and identify any potential problems. Spending a few dollars to ensure your pool pump adheres to code can potentially save you much more when you consider the possible dangers from electrical pool equipment.
