- 1). Plant your silk tree in a full-sun location that also offers well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives direct sunlight for six to eight hours each day. Plant your silk tree at the same level that it was growing in its nursery container.
- 2). Provide your silk tree with enough supplemental irrigation to keep its soil from completely drying out. Water your silk tree with a drip, soaker or bubbler hose to ensure that the moisture sinks deep into the soil. For best results, provide your silk tree with at least 1 inch of water each week.
- 3). Spread mulch in a 3- to 5-foot diameter around your tree to keep its roots cool, conserve moisture and discourage weed growth. Keep the mulch at least 5 inches from the trunk of your silk tree to discourage increased insect activity at the base of your tree.
- 4). Fertilize your silk tree in the early spring, before springtime growth is observed. Use a fertilizer that has been specially formulated for use with flowering trees to ensure that your silk tree is receiving the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. Apply the fertilizer according to the directions on the fertilizer package.
- 5). Prune discolored, diseased, damaged or dead branches from your silk tree as needed to maintain its health. Use only sharpened and sterilized pruning shears or loppers when pruning your silk tree to help prevent the spread of tree diseases like vascular wilt.
