- 1). Shut off the toilet water supply. The water supply valve that controls the water flow are usually on the wall or floor behind the toilet. Rotate the knob on the end of the supply valve to the right in order to cut the water supply.
- 2). Flush the toilet. Pick up the toilet lid and carefully set it aside. Locate the flapper, which is the rubber, oval-shaped object in the bottom of the tank. There will be a chain running from the top of the flapper to the tank handle rod. Lift up the flapper by hand and allow any water still inside the tank to drain out into the bowl.
- 3). Unhook the chain from the top of the flapper. Remove the flapper from the tank, either by unclipping it from the hinges holding it in place, or by sliding it up and over the overflow tube.
- 4). Examine the toilet bowl flapper. If it is cracked or damaged, replace it with a new one of the same size and shape.
- 5). Dry off the flapper. Apply a light coating of silicone grease around the bottom edge of the flapper.
- 6). Replace the flapper by snapping it in place or slipping it over the overflow tube.
- 7). Clip the chain back to the top of the flapper. Connect a weight, such as a fishing lure weight, to the chain where it meets the top of the flapper. This will help weigh down the flapper when it closes and seal it.
- 8). Restore the water supply. Allow the toilet to fill. Flush the tank and check that the flapper seals properly. Straighten out the flapper chain, if needed. Replace the tank lid.
