- 1). Shut off the faucet's water supply. Locate the shutoff valves, usually beneath the sink, and turn clockwise to close them; ensure that the water has been successfully stopped by turning the faucet on and off.
- 2). Pull off or unscrew the decorative cover on one of the faucet handles, depending on the design. This should expose a screw that anchors the faucet handle. Unscrew it, and lift the faucet cap to reveal the stem of the faucet; keep track of the loose screws, because they will be necessary for reassembly.
- 3). Use a wrench to remove the stem from the leaky faucet handle with the O-ring attached. There may be packing nuts or placement clips that prevent the stem from being removed, but these can be slipped off or undone with a wrench of the appropriate size. Reach into the housing of the faucet, and remove the rubber washer as well.
- 4). Bring the faucet stem, O-ring and washer to a home improvement or hardware store, and purchase the matching replacements for the O-ring and washer.
- 5). Reassemble the faucet fixture with the new components using the same method in reverse order. Tighten the connections firmly, returning all corresponding clips, screws and nuts into place.
- 6). Turn on the faucet valves to restore the water supply. Run the water, and check for any leaks in the new seal to ensure that the installation was successful.
